Retired officer charged over lesbian remark
A former policeman has been charged for allegedly calling a female officer a “dyke”
John Atkinson, 45, from North Wales, is accused of making the offensive remark at a former colleague’s funeral. He was arrested and charged under the Public Order Act for using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour likely to cause alarm or distress.
The North Wales Daily Post reported that he used the term during a private conversation with his officers. He was bailed to appear at a magistrates court in April.
Mr Atkinson denies the offence
This isn’t the first time a Welsh policeman has faced homophobic allegations, last year North Wales Police chief constable Richard Brunstrom escaped disciplinary action after he apologised for referring to homosexuals as “queers”.
