Libraries refused funding over gay books
The Oklahoma House of Representatives, which last year legislated that gay themed books should be moved to adult sections of libraries, is threatening to deny funding to libraries that
don’t enforce the rule.
Politicians in the House Appropriations and Budget Committee passed HB 2158 by a vote of 13-3, and it is headed to the full House.
Bill sponsor Rep. Sally Kern told the Daily Oklahoman, “If we expose children to sexual material without parental knowledge and guidance, we’re programming them for destruction.”
However, Jennifer Greenstreet, a librarian at the Ada Public Library, said she wouldn’t know how to decide which books met the bills’ requirements.
Jeanie Johnson, president of the Oklahoma Library Association, said the bill “flies in the face of the idea of a public library.”
