Homophobia being kicked out of sport
Gay footballers are looking to give homophobia a thrashing after highlighting the issue in a 7-0 friendly victory against the UK Parliamentary Football Club.
The match, between gay football team Stonewall FC and the all party parliamentary side, was arranged to raise awareness of homophobia.
Politicians in the line up included Alan Keane, Tony Wright and Stephen Hepburn.
A Stonewall FC spokesman said: “In the end the superior fitness of the younger Stonewall side made a huge difference against a depleted parliamentary side, which had a number of players missing due to a late vote in the Commons the night before.”
“It’s great that the Parliamentary team agreed to accept our challenge and I think both teams enjoyed the match.”
“Despite the result the Parliament team did themselves proud given that we play every week at quite a high level.”
The MPs welcomed Stonewall FC’s efforts in challenging homophobia within sport.
Clive Betts MP for Sheffield Attercliffe, who is the Chair of the Parliamentary Football Club said: “The issue of homophobia in football is certainly one which needs to be addressed.”
“Stonewall FC are really doing their bit to challenge those damaging stereotypes.”
Stonewall FC are the first gay football club in the UK, they are the current British, European, World and Gay Olympic Champions
