The lesbian storyline between Sonia and Naomi on EastEnders has been bringing in its fair share of complaints.
211 emails calls and letters have been received by the EastEnders press office, objecting to the storyline which saw the break up of Sonia’s marriage, fueled by her first gay kiss with a friend.
Julian Payne from the BBC press office was quick to answer concerned viewers, pointing out that the story fully complied with BBC guidelines for pre-watershed drama, and that it had been checked by editorial policy.
“EastEnders has a history of tackling difficult issues,” said Mr Payne, “even so, this has not generated the highest number of complaints for a gay storyline by any means.”
An exclusive poll of ten real life EastEnders revealed that 9 out of 10 had “no problem” with the story, though one lady pointed out “it’s different with Sonia, though, isn’t it? I mean, we’re watched her grow up. I remember her when she was just a little girl. I want her to be happy. She’s been through so much!”
“Is she really gay?” wondered one man. “It all seems a bit sudden. I’m not sure I really believe it.”
“Actually I’m surprised anyone would complain about the gay relationship, though it seems ludicrous that someone could change their sexuality overnight” said another man. “Are you sure they’re not moaning about the acting? “
