Actress recognised for gay work
She’s played a lesbian serial killer in Monster and previously refused to marry her boyfriend until same sex marriage was legalised in America, and now actress Charlize Theron has deservingly been given an award for raising issues of the gay community.
Theron, was honoured for increasing “visibility and understanding” of homosexuality, at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) awards in Los Angeles last weekend.
The ceremony was held in the same venue as the Oscars, she said: “”This is very surreal for me because two years ago, I stood right here and won my Oscar for Monster.
“I feel so fortunate that I am in a relationship with a wonderful man, I find it incredibly unfair that because of our sexual preference, we have the rights that we have, and that, because of someone else’s sexual preference, they don’t have those same rights.”
Awards also went to Felicity Huffman for the transgender movie, Transamerica, for outstanding film in limited release, and hit sitcom Will Grace for best comedy.
The GLAAD is dedicated to promoting and ensuring fair, accurate, and inclusive representation of people and events in the media as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.
