Gay cowboy movie Brokeback Mountain has been included in a shortlist of the top 50 books adapted into a film.

The list, which is being organised by the Guardian and the British Book Marketing Society, recognises literature which has been turned into successful movies.

It will be voted by readers on the internet and in bookshops.

The winner will be announced at the Guardian Hay literary festival in May.

Books on the list embrace a variety of genres and include stories which have led to Stephen Spielberg classics as well as cult films such as Stand by Me and Clockwork Orange.
