Elton John’s musical faces early end
Just days after Elton John’s gay sitcom was dropped, his Broadway musical is now set to close.
Lestat, a musical, based on Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire books, will end this weekend after just 39 performances and 33 previews.
Gregg Maday, executive vice president of Warner Brother’s Theatre Ventures Group, the producers of the show said: “I am privileged to have worked with this amazingly talented company.
“They truly embody what makes Broadway unique and special and why Warner Brothers is thrilled to be part of this community. We have learned a great deal during this process and remain committed to producing exciting projects for the Broadway stage, adapted from our rich, deep library.”
The show was savaged by critics on its opening night last month. It is “beyond rescue” according to trade newspaper Variety and the New York Times dubbed it a “musical sleeping pill,” despite many parts being changed from its San Francisco run, which also got poor reviews.
The gay star’s show was labelled “laughable” and “deadly dull” by the Hollywood Reporter.
However, despite criticism, the production has been nominated for two Tonys, one for Best Actress, one for Best Costumes.
