Comment – Bible bashing homophobes
Dave McElhill takes a look at emails doing the rounds and investigates the background to this great analysis of Biblical views on the people populating God’s green earth.
Are you tired of having to deal with all those dull old arguments concerning the Bible’s view of homosexuality? Bored of hearing the same old rants?
A list has been compiled and sent to top US radio talk show therapist in response to her claims against homosexuality.
So, here’s some new issues to throw at the homophobe’s obsessed with the ‘good’ book, by taking a dive into the laws that are legitimised by ‘God’, such as stoning rebellious youths at the gates of the city.
The old testament is full of the background of ‘God’s’ law, particularly books such as Leviticus.
Here is a selection of the examples sent to a leading radio show diva who fronted the Dr Laura Show, based at KFI in Los Angeles.
“When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord (Lev 1:9). The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?”
“I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?”
“Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?”
The emailed list was sent to top US homophobe Dr Laura Schlessinger who has made numerous attacks on Gay and Lesbian relationships in the past.
“I’m sorry – hear it one more time, perfectly clearly: If you’re gay or a lesbian, it’s a biological error that inhibits you from relating normally to the opposite sex,” she stated back in 1998.
“The fact that you are intelligent, creative and valuable is all true. The error is in your inability to relate sexually intimately, in a loving way to a member of the opposite sex – it is a biological error. “
Dr Schlessinger converted to Judaism in 1996, but it is only since 1998 when she became a Othodox Jew that she has been openly homophobic.
Previous to this she had been supportive to people of gay and lesbian people on her radio show.
She opposes same sex marriage and claimed on a show in 1999 that “for sexual deviancy, sexual behaviour, there are no rights.”
She has also claimed, according to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, that a “huge portion of the male homosexual populace is predatory on young boys.”
She stopped her sponsorship for the US show Frasier, season commenting that she could not condone its tacit support for pre marital sex.
Other picks of the bunch regarding responses to the Christian right include;
“A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this?
Lev 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev 19:27. How should they die?”
Have fun kids and don’t wind them up to much.
