China bans foreign gay adoption
Gay people will be barred from adopting children in China as the country aims to stop an influx of foreign nationals wishing to adopt.
The new rules will ban foreign people who are obese, disabled or unmarried, including gay people in the latter category.
A spokesman for China’s Centre of Adoption Affairs told Reuters: “The number of people applying for adoptions is soaring, but following the development of China’s economy and society the, number of abandoned and orphaned children is less and less.”
He said the conditions are being imposed to ensure children grow up in “better conditions.”
Gay people are not allowed to adopt in China itself. Homosexuality is still a taboo issue in the country but there have been calls to accept it amid a mounting AIDS epidemic.
