Gay Governor’s wife tells her side of the story
The wife of former governor Jim McGreevey is to talk about her ex-husband’s gay life on the The Oprah Winfrey Show.
He became the first openly gay state governor in American history following his dramatic public confession of an affair with his former homeland security advisor, Golan Cipel.
He left office two months later, in November 2004.
The gay confession followed threats from Cipel’s lawyer of a $50 million sexual harassment suit against McGreevey.
“My truth is that I am a gay American,” he told a press conference at the time.
Mr Mc Greevey wrote a book last year, The Confessions.
The former Governor appeared on Oprah last year, and shocked viewers with his confession of an encounter with a gay aide while his wife lay in bed in hospital following a difficult birth of their son.
Following this admission, and further revelations of sexual encounters at highway rest stops, Mr McGreevey and his second wife began divorce proceedings.
Now his wife Dina Matos McGreevey will speak for the first time about her experiences on Oprah on May 1st.
Her book, Silent Memoirs, comes less than a year after her husband’s confessions.
Mr McGreevey is demanding that a judge dissolve their marriage, grant custody of their daughter and make a decision on child support.
In a strange twist, he did not specify which parent should get custody of the child.
Legal experts interpret that as a threat to his wife, warning her to settle now or face a long and dirty legal battle.
“You have to assume this lawyer didn’t just drop a pronoun,” divorce attorney Raoul Felder told the New York Post.
“It’s either very carelessly constructed or carefully constructed to be purposefully vague.”
Should McGreevey win custody, his daughter will live with him and his partner, executive Mark O’Donnell, in Plainfield, New Jersey.
