Miss World force change to trans documentary name
A programme to be broadcast tonight about a transsexual beauty pageant has been re-named after broadcaster Channel 4 were taken to court.
The Miss World organisation successfully sought an injunction to prevent Channel 4 using their trade mark.
Mr Miss World will now be broadcast as Mr Miss Pageant.
The documentary follows power tool designer Gavin, from County Durham, as he fulfils a lifetime ambition to enter the final of “Miss International Queen.”
The beauty pageant event for transgender people is held in Thailand every year.
Gavin – or Leah, as his alter ego is called – will be the first ever British entrant as Miss England.
Unlike his fellow competitors, Gavin has had no surgery and is heterosexual and will be accompanied on the journey by his girlfriend Sue.
A Channel 4 spokeswoman told Media Guardian: “Following an injunction from Miss World Ltd, regarding a trademark infringement against the title of the documentary, Mr Miss World, Channel 4 can confirm we have complied with the terms of the court and the title has now changed to Mr Miss Pageant.“
Julia Morley, the executive chairwoman of Miss World Ltd, said: “The Miss World name is a long standing registered trade mark and Miss World Ltd has built up the reputation and recognition of the name over many years.
“Miss World Ltd will continue to protect its trade marks against unauthorised use.”
Mr Miss Pageant will be broadcast by Channel4 this evening at 10pm.
