Gordon Brown urged to support gay football
The Prime Minister was in the crowd at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night to watch England lose to Germany, and his love of football is well-known.
Now Gordon Brown is being urged to show his support for the World Cup, which is being hosted in England next year.
Not the over-rated FIFA event, of course, but the International Gay and Lesbian Football Association (IGLFA) World Championship, which kicks off in exactly one year’s time today.
London team Leftfooters FC won its bid to host the championship earlier this year after IGLFA officials visited facilities at Regents Park.
Ten 11-a-side pitches and six 7-a-side pitches have been reserved for the event, which is supported by the Football Association, Westminster City Council, gay equality organisation Stonewall, the Mayor of London and Visit London.
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ming Campbell, former sports minister Richard Caborn and Alan Keen MP also backed London’s successful bid.
Now Westminster City Council want the Prime Minister to show his support for the gay World Cup.
“We hope that the new Prime Minister Gordon Brown will join the large number of people, including Tony Blair when he was Prime Minister, who have already shown their support for this event,” Councillor Daniel Astaire, cabinet member for customer and community services, told PinkNews.co.uk
“The tournament is aimed at showing that sport can be enjoyable and accessible to all people.
“We also hope that it will show London is one of the most tolerant cities in the world and welcomes all people without discriminating on the basis of sexuality.
“This is a fun international event that all Londoners can enjoy in the run up to the 2012 Olympics.”
Westminster has already offered a number of volunteers to assist at the event.
