Police will target drugs at Sydney Mardi Gras
New South Wales police have warned gay revellers at Australia’s biggest party that they have a zero tolerance approach to drugs.
Sydney’s month of Mardi Gras celebrations culminates on March 1st with the world-famous parade and a Sleaze Ball and the Good Vibrations music festival attended by more than 35,000 people.
Police said they will be using sniffer dogs and more than 100 officers to stop people using drugs.
Last year 20 people were charged with possession at last year’s parade.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Mardi Gras, and a group called the 100 Revs will be taking part in the parade for the first time.
The group of Christian ministers yesterday issued an apology to the LGBT community for the way they had been treated by churches.
“As ministers of various churches and denominations we recognise that the churches we belong to, and the church in general, have not been places of welcome for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people,” the Revs said in a statement.
“For these things we apologise. We are deeply sorry and ask the forgiveness of the GLBT community.”
