A new name for Glasgow’s Pride
Scotland’s largest city will celebrate the LGBT community at the end of August with a renamed Pride event.
Pride Scotia (Glasgow) Ltd has changed it name to Pride Glasgow and plan to bring Pride back to Glasgow with a bang, say organisers.
They are hoping to attract well-known performers to appear at the event. Glasgow last hosted a Pride event in 2006.
Explaining the change of name, Pride Glasgow director Ross Stevenson told PinkNews.co.uk:
“We just wanted to create an event that was more focused on Glasgow and highlighted our city as a destination for LGBT people.”
Pride Glasgow already has the support of Glasgow City Council, Strathclyde Police and Glasgow and Greater Clyde National Health Service.
While plans for this year’s event are still at an early stage, the 30th August has been chosen as the date and once again Georges Square is where revellers will be entertained.
“It’s about bringing together LGBT organisations, businesses, individuals and our supporters back together to create an event that Glasgow, Scotland and the UK can be proud of,” said Mr Stevenson.
The new website for Pride Glasgow will be going live in the next few weeks and will be the main area of information about this year’s event.
In 2006 nine firemen from Glasgow were ordered to undergo an intensive course in diversity training as punishment for refusing to carry out their jobs at the city’s Pride Scotia event.
The decision from fire chiefs at Strathclyde Fire and Rescue (SFR) came after days of deliberation over what their response to the case should be.
One officer was demoted from watch manager to crew manager, with a £5,000 pay cut.
The officers admitted that they should have performed their duties at the festival in June and received written warnings for their actions.
