Stonewall FC wins gold at EuroGames 2008
An English football team has picked up more silverwear at the EuroGames in Barcelona.
Stonewall FC won the soccer tournament, beating old rivals Cologne 2 – 0 in the finals.
23 teams from across Europe took part.
Those that did not qualify from their group stages played out for the recreational competition, which was won by Stonewall FC Reserve team beating Belgium on penalties.
Stonewall captain Darren Lewis said:
“The tournament was a great success and another well deserved victory for Stonewall.
“The standard of football was high and our squad worked hard with a great spirit to bring home gold.”
The team, sponsored by Barclays, won gold at the Gay Games in Chicago in 2006.
With 5,300 participants the 12th EuroGames in Barcelona, which ran from 24th to 27th July, was the best attended yet. 40% of the athletes were women.
Football fans are already looking forward to the 2008 International Gay and Lesbian Football Association World Championship being held in London next month.
London team Leftfooters FC won its bid to host the championship last year after International Gay and Lesbian Football Assocation officials visited facilities at Regents Park.
50 men’s and women’s teams from countries such as Croatia, South Africa, Uganda, Argentina, Mexico, Japan and Australia are taking part.
London 2008 will take place in Regent’s Park, with competitive and recreational competitions for both male and female teams from all over the world, between 24th and 30th August 2008.
