Gay icon Fran Drescher speaks up for same-sex marriage
The star of TV comedy The Nanny has said that everyone should have the right to get married, gay or straight.
Fren Drescher was speaking ahead of a fundraising party she is holding tomorrow night for Equality California.
The group is campaigning for the defeat of a state ballot overturning legal gay marriage.
“I don’t know if you realise this, but I’m a gay icon,” she told E! Online.
“But even if I weren’t, I’m a political activist who believes in preserving the American dream which is tolerance of diversity and the separation of church and state…It’s simply un-American not to be tolerant of different lifestyles. If you wanna live in a single-minded, religious-based country you’re in the wrong place.”
Proposition 8 is an initiative measure on the 2008 California General Election ballot in November.
It would amend the state Constitution to “eliminate right of same-sex couples to marry.”
In May the California Supreme Court overturned a ban on same-sex marriages in the state.
The Court voted 4 to 3 to strike the ban on gay marriage in California.
Opponents of gay marriage raised over one million signatures to place the initiative on the November ballot.
