Doncaster urged to embrace the pink pound
The Yorkshire town of Doncaster is “sitting up and taking notice of the opportunities” that being gay-friendly can bring, says a local activist.
The Pride committee has launched a new website after this summer’s successful event and two new gay venues have opened.
Doncaster Pride Vice Chair Jenny Dewsnap said:
“When we started as a committee just a couple of months before the first Pride in 2007 never did we expect that our efforts would extend beyond planning and hosting a great party.
“However, we now have evidence to show that the Doncaster evening economy is beginning to sit up and take notice of the opportunities to engage more effectively with the gay community.
“As a committee we are really proud and feel our efforts are making a lasting difference.
“For far too long the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community have travelled outside Doncaster to socialise and now we feel we’ve been instrumental in influencing the development of a gay scene in Doncaster – which is great for everyone and also means more money will be put back into the Doncaster evening economy too.”
Pride 2009 will be held on 16th August.
