Brighton Pride organisers work with local community to improve disabled access
Brighton and Hove Pride organisers have announced that this summer’s event provided the best access yet to disabled people.
The organisers say that this was achieved by working with the Federation for Disabled People and the City Council.
The event had a free wheelchair-accessible bus transporting people to and from Preston Park, twice last amount of disabled parking spaces, and a parade viewing area for people with mobility issues.
There was also an Access Tent at Preston Park, provided by Spectrum as in previous years, for people with any disabilities who required a safe and quiet space to enjoy the event.
Kath Browne, Lead Trustee for Community and Diversity, said:
“We are pleased that some things worked really well this year but we still have a long way to go.
“There have been a number of people who have given feedback on the improvements we need to make for next year and we hope to hear and learn more at the feedback event.
“If you do have comments please get in touch, or better still get involved and let’s work together to make Pride 2009 the most accessible ever!”
Geraldine Des Moulins, Chief Officer of Brighton & Hove Federation of Disabled People, said:
“As part of the Federation’s commitment to improve accessibility in the City, we were delighted to work with Pride to improve accessibility to this important City event.”
In order to build on this achievement, Pride organisers will be holding an Access Feedback Evening on Monday 6th October at Jury’s Inn Hotel in Brighton. Members of the public are welcome to attend and suggest improvements.
