Black gay activist among new Stonewall trustees
Gay equality organisation Stonewall has announced the appointment of four new trustees.
Rob Berkeley, Founding Chair of the Black Gay Men’s Advisory Group, will join Stonewall’s board, alongside professionals from Barclays and Aviva.
Charity trustees are the people legally responsible for the overall management and decision-making in the charity.
Stonewall trustee positions were advertised following a “skills audit” of the current board to identify gaps in expertise and knowledge.
During its open recruitment process, Stonewall asked people from black and minority ethnic communities to apply as they were under-represented on the board.
Mr Berkeley is Director of Runnymede Trust, Chair of the Naz Project and chair of governors at a primary school.
The other new trustees are:
Johan Fraser, Change Director with Barclays Bank; Anna Whowell, Director at Troika Dialog and co-founder of lesbian network CityPink and Paul Wood, Group Chief Security Officer at Aviva.
“We’re delighted that an open recruitment process for trustees has enabled us once again to attract highly talented individuals to guide us into the future,” said Stonewall’s Chair David Isaac.
“Our board now has a strong skill set to help take forward Stonewall’s vital work into our third decade.”
Founded in 1989 in response to Section 28, Stonewall today employs 52 staff, supported by almost 100 regular volunteers, in London, Edinburgh, Bangor and Cardiff.
Turnover in the financial year to 30 September 2008 was £3m, up from £1.4m five years ago.
