Teenager says he did not have illegal sexual contact with gay Mayor
A young gay man has given an interview to an Oregon paper about his relationship with the Mayor of Portland.
Last week Mayor Sam Adams publicly apologised for lying for the past 18 months about the natue of his relationship with Beau Breedlove.
He admitted that his previous assertions that he was merely “mentoring” the teenager for a career in politics had no foundation and were simply a front for their sexual relationship.
Mr Breedlove was 17 and working as a state legislative intern when he met then-City Commissioner Adams, who was elected Mayor last year and took office on January 1st.
Mayor Adams said they had sex several times during the summer of 2005, by only after Mr Breedlove turned 18.
In an interview with The Oregonian, Mr Breedlove said they had kissed a couple of times when he was 17 but did not have sex until after his birthday.
“I saw it as a friendship that had crossed the line a couple of times, but I saw it as a friendship,” Mr Breedlove said.
“When I say cross the line, I don’t mean as an unwarranted or unwanted affection.
“I just didn’t see it as something with any potential. … I saw it as that was the line that we had crossed a couple of times, was ‘friends’ to ‘friends with benefits.’
“I was not pulled into this situation by Sam. I was not unfairly influenced by Sam. I think Sam is a wonderful man.”
The Oregon Attorney General is to investigate if Mr Adams is telling the truth – if he had sex with Mr Breedlove when he was 17 he has broken state law, which stipulates no-one under 18 can give consent to sexual acts.
