Blogger Perez Hilton apologises for homophobic abuse
Celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton has apologised for calling Black Eyed Peas singer will.i.am a faggot.
He had come under pressure from gay rights groups to say sorry for using the slur, and finally issued an apology yesterday.
“I am apologising to the gay community, to anyone who was hurt by my choice of words.”
Hilton also pledged not to use the word again.
A video posted by TMZ on Monday showed Hilton call Will.I.am a “f**king faggot” during a violent outburst outside the MuchMusic Video Awards.
The use of the homophobic slur caused the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to criticise the blogger, arguing that his “vulgar” comments could “feed a climate of hatred and intolerance toward our community”.
Hilton has been accused of simply wanting “mad attention” by the Black Eyed Peas singer.
The initial story broke when Hilton, real name Mario Lavandeira, wrote on his Twitter: “I was assaulted by Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas and his security guards. I am bleeding. Please, I need to file a police report. No joke.”
Toronto police confirmed that Hilton made an assault accusation. Molina has reportedly been charged with the assault.
However, Will.i.am responded to the story by releasing his own video in which he said the accusations were ‘lies’.
