Doncaster mayor’s decision to cut Pride funding brings ‘record interest’
The decision of new Doncaster mayor Peter Davies to cut funding for the town’s annual Pride event has led to record levels of interest, organisers have said.
On being elected, Davies, an English Democrat, said the taxpayer should not fund gays and lesbians “parading through town advertising their sexuality”.
After he was forced to admit in a radio interview that he had no idea how much revenue the event generated for the town, Davies backed down and said he would honour the commitment to Pride.
The media attention over the case has now led to increased interest in the event.
Organiser Jen Dewsnap told the BBC: “With the recent publicity we now know of people who will be coming from all over the country.
“Its important that we put on a good show, not just to show that Doncaster Pride is a good event but also because this may be the first time some people have visited Doncaster, it is important for us to be able to represent our town with a good event.”
