Claire Balding’s cancer ‘in remission’
Claire Balding, the openly lesbian BBC sports presenter, has spoken of her delight after discovering her treatment for throat cancer had been successful.
She underwent two throat operations earlier this year and had her thyroid gland removed. She had radioactive iodine treatment in July.
Writing on her website after a scan, the 38-year-old presenter said: “There are no signs of the thyroid cancer having spread anywhere else so all is looking happy and rosy in the world.
“I am hugely relieved and very grateful for all your support, particularly to those people who have had thyroid cancer and got in touch to share their experiences with me.
“I can’t tell you how much this helped me get through the treatment process.”
She added: “Now, it’s full steam ahead with a busy summer of work.”
Balding, who first noticed the lump on her throat just before Christmas, previously said she didn’t want any sympathy.
She told the Daily Telegraph in June: “I didn’t tell anyone other than my family and friends as I didn’t want to be treated any differently.
“You hear the word ‘cancer’ and you think it is a death sentence. In fact, the shock is the biggest thing about a diagnosis of cancer.”
