Transvestite comedian Eddie Izzard wants to stand as an MP
Comedian Eddie Izzard has reiterated his intention to stand as an MP or MEP in the future.
The transvestite star yesterday finished 43 marathons in 51 days and posed with prime minister Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah outside 10 Downing Street.
He said: “I’ve said I will stand as an MP or MEP at some stage in 10 to 15 years, I like to make long announcements. But at the moment I’ve spent so long trying to get my career going I don’t want to throw it away.”
His marathon effort took him more than 1,000 miles and he has raised £200,000 for charity.
Izzard said: “I’ve made it back, I think psychologically stopping has been good so I feel okay. I feel really good. My legs hurt, my body hurts, I’m very tired. I lost my toenails, had blisters and stuff, but to finish, it’s kind of like science fiction in a way.”
He added: “I just had to keep going, I just get determined to do strange things.”
Last year, the comedian told Newsweek of his political ambitions to be an MEP.
He said: “People are very worried about sovereignty and the loss of sovereignty. I think the stakes are if we don’t make the EU work, then the world is screwed. End of story.”
Izzard is one of the Labour Party’s major private donors.
