Video: Charlize Theron steps up support for gay marriage
Actress Charlize Theron has repeated her calls for gay marriage, saying she will not tie the knot with her boyfriend until gay and lesbian couples can do the same.
Appearing on The View on Thursday, she was asked by host Barbara Walters when she would marry long-term boyfriend Stuart Townsend.
Theron replied: “I don’t want to get married because I feel that right now the institution of marriage feels very one-sided, and I want to live in a country where we all have equal rights.”
Several years ago, she was honoured by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation for increasing “visibility and understanding” of homosexuality.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have proffered similar support, with Pitt saying in 2006: “Angie and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able.”
Gay couples can currently marry in four American states – Massachusetts, Iowa, Vermont and Connecticut.
Gay marriage is legal in Maine but has been put on hold as a referendum is to be held on the issue in November.
In New Hampshire, it comes into law on January 1st 2010.
It was briefly legal in California before being overturned by the state’s voters last autumn.
