Melissa Etheridge considers lesbian coalition
Lesbian rock icon Melissa Etheridge has discussed the possibility of forming a sisterly coalition with other female gay celebrity activists.
When asked about the possibility of teaming up with figures such as Cynthia Nixon and Ellen DeGeneres, both long-standing gay rights advocates, she told the New York Daily News: “That’s a noble goal and makes sense.
“Sometimes, the synchronicity happens and we do come together like that. It’s funny.
“Being a celebrity, you’re thought of as part of this club. But it’s just a perception that we all hang out.”
Etheridge, 48, is an Oscar and two-time Grammy winner who came out in 2003. Her most successful hit was Come to the Window.
She famously survived breast cancer in 2006.
Speaking of the ordeal, she said: “Cancer woke me up. It was a symptom of a body that needed attention. I’m a different person now.”
The singer added: “My personal goal is to get women to understand that health is our responsibility. There is not a pill or drug at the end that’s going to fix you. You are responsible.”
