Chaz Bono says transition is ‘the best decision I’ve ever made’
Chaz Bono, the son of singer Cher, appeared on US television this morning to discuss his gender reassignment.
Speaking to Good Morning America, he said eight months into transition, he feels “great”.
Bono said: “The first hurdle was that I wasn’t going to be able to do this privately, like most people can.”
But he added that he was pleased to show to other trans people that he knew he’d made the right decision.
Discussing the fact that he did not feel able to begin transitioning until the age of 40, he said: “As far back as I can remember, I felt like a boy.”
When asked whether he was frightened about the next few years, he said: “At this point, nothing scares me. I’m living the life I always wanted to live and it’s amazing.
“Life is short and life is precious. This is who I am. I need to finally be who I am.”
When asked to explain more about his transition, he said: “To me, gender is between your ears, not between your legs.”
Bono announced his plans to become a man earlier this year. His mother Cher, who admitted she had reacted badly when he came out as a lesbian years ago, said: “I do not understand but I will strive to be understanding.”
