Gay superhero comic up for major award
A new comic called Spandex, about a gang of gay superheros, has been nominated for an Eagle Award, the comic world’s equivalent of an Oscar. It is being put forward in the category of Best British Colour Comic Book.
The creator of Spandex, Martin Eden, said he was “shocked” to be nominated, not having expected the accolade in any way. He said: “I’m so proud of my comic and really trying to do things that have never been done in a comic before. I’m up against some big titles in my category, so it’d be exciting if the indie guy won! I have some amazing plans for the next few issues of Spandex, and I can’t wit to unleash it all on the comic-reading world.”
Spandex is now being published as an ongoing project, with a view to publishing a collection in book form eventually. Mr Eden said his original plan was to publish just one issue before working on a book, but added: “After global media attention, it was just too exciting to wait.”
Spandex Issue Two is currently on sale and can be purchased at the Spandex website, selected comic shops including Forbidden Planet and also via online download. This issue involves the Brighton-based Spandex team heading for Japan to recover the stolen crown jewels at the request of the Queen. While in Japan, they fight with the Pink Ninjas, face down the terrifying Gayzilla and recruit Neon, the world’s first gay, fluorescent ninja.
