98 per cent of PinkNews.co.uk readers want full marriage equality
A poll of almost 800 LGBT PinkNews.co.uk readers has found that the vast majority want equal marriage rights.
The survey found that 98 per cent agreed that marriage laws should be gender-neutral, while just two per cent feel civil partnerships are adequate.
Of the 13 people who did not want gender-neutral marriage, six said that civil partnerships in their current form are adequate and five wanted to see faiths being given the option to hold them (two did not answer the question).
We also asked readers whether the law should give all couples the choice of civil partnerships or marriage.
Seventy-seven per cent of those who answered agreed, while 23 per cent said that marriage should be the only form of recognition for couples.
The majority of respondents (65 per cent) were not in a civil partnership but said they they hoped to have a civil partnership or marriage one day.
Twenty-two per cent said they were in a civil partnership and 11 per cent said they did not ever intend to marry or have a civil partnership.
Civil partnerships were legalised in 2005 and gave gay couples all the rights and benefits of heterosexual marriage, except the name and several minor ceremonial differences.
Editorial: Marriage is the gold standard.
