Trans woman remanded in male prison over tube death
A trans woman has been remanded in a men’s prison on a charge of murdering 63-year-old Sonia Burgess, who was hit by a train at Kings Cross station last Monday.
Nina Kanagasingham, 34, of Chichele Road, Cricklewood, did not enter an application for bail at the Old Bailey this morning. She will appear in court again on February 3rd.
PA reports that Judge Timothy Pontius was told she was in the process of transitioning from male to female and wished to be addressed as Nina.
She has been remanded in Wandsworth Prison, which is a men’s facility.
She is said to have pushed Ms Burgess, who was also trans, from a crowded rush hour platform. She was killed by an incoming train shortly afterwards.
Ms Burgess, who was known professionally by her birth name David, was a respected human rights lawyer who was described as a “trailblazer” in her field.
