Marie Osmond: ‘My son did not die by suicide because he was gay’
Marie Osmond has hit at out suggestions that her son killed himself because he was gay.
Michael Blosil, 18, died by suicide in February. There was speculation that he had killed himself because of his sexual orientation and his Mormon religion.
But Osmond told Oprah Winfrey: “My son was not gay. He wanted to be married and have a family and travel all over the world. And it wouldn’t matter if he was – I have a daughter who’s gay. She was the most offended by [he rumours]. [The claims imply that] everyone who’s gay commits suicide.”
Blosil had been in and out of rehab since the age of 12 but Osmond said he was clean of drugs when he jumped from his apartment window in New York.
The veteran entertainer, 51, added that her son had tried to kill himself in 2007.
She said: “He promised he would never do anything like that again and I believed him. Whatever his reality was, I do believe that there are moments when you slip into insanity and you no longer think rationally. I believe that’s what happened.”
Osmond added that she had spoken with Blosil shortly before he killed himself.
She said: “[He told me] ‘I have no friends.’ …I said, ‘Mike, I’m gonna be there Monday and it’s gonna be OK.’ But depression doesn’t wait ’til Monday.”
