New York man jailed for eight years over anti-gay assault
A 27-year-old man from the Queens area of New York has been jailed for eight years for his part in a anti-gay robbery.
Daniel Aleman apologised for the attack on 50-year-old Jack Price and said he was drunk at the time.
Mr Price spent three weeks in hospital after Aleman and Daniel Rodriguez punched and kicked him.
He sustained broken ribs, a fractured jaw and a lacerated spleen and was placed in a medically-induced coma.
The pair shouted homophobic abuse at they beat him and stole his wallet in October last year as he visited a late-night deli.
According to the New York Daily News, Aleman said: “I’m very sorry for what I did. I was drunk and I was under the influence. I made a very big mistake.”
Mr Price, who was at Queens Supreme Court, said Aleman had got “caught up with the stupidity” of the attack.
Aleman and Rodriguez, 22, admitted robbery as a hate crime.
Rodriguez is awaiting sentencing.
