Video: George Bush’s wife and daughter support gay marriage
Former US president George Bush’s daughter has joined his wife in declaring her support for marriage equality.
Laura Bush announced last year that she supports same-sex marriage and believes abortion should remain legal.
One of the couple’s daughters, Barbara, has now joined a Human Rights Campaign for same-sex marriage.
In a short video for the gay group, she says: “I am Barbara Bush, and I am a New Yorker for marriage equality.
“New York is about fairness and equality. And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love.”
Last year, Mrs Bush told CNN: “When couples are committed to each other and love each other, they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has.”
In 2004, Mr Bush endorsed a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
He said at the time: “The union of a man and a woman is the most enduring human institution, honoured and encouraged in all cultures and by every religious faith.
“Marriage cannot be severed from its cultural, religious and natural roots without weakening the good influence of society.”
