Men arrested in North Cyprus for gay sex
Two men have reportedly been arrested in North Cyprus for having gay sex.
According to Kibris newspaper, the men were accused of having “unnatural intercourse” in a hostel in Nicosia.
One of the men was arrested in the hostel, while the other was arrested in a car park.
If convicted, they face up to five years in prison.
The case has already come before a court, where police were granted one day’s custody of the men to investigate.
While Cyprus has repealed laws against homosexuality, the Northern Republican of Cyprus has not.
When the island became an independent nation in 1960 the anti-gay British colonial laws remained.
