More details emerge in gay suicide case
More details have emerged in the case of a US student who killed himself after his roommate allegedly filmed him having sex with a man.
Tyler Clementi, 18, a student at Rutgers University in New Jersey, jumped from the George Washington Bridge last September.
He had allegedly discovered that his roommate Dharun Ravi, 19, had secretly recorded his sex session.
Mr Ravi is on trial for invasion of privacy and bias intimidation.
The student’s lawyers are seeking to have a mistrial declared and claimed last month that prosecutors withheld evidence.
According to the New York Times, court papers filed this week include transcripts of each student’s online conversations, as well as interviews with witnesses.
The papers suggest that Mr Ravi, who discovered that his roommate was gay before they met, was fixated on Mr Clementi’s sexuality, despite wishing to appear blase about it.
Mr Clement, the papers suggested, saw himself as anti-social. They are also suggest that he had already come out to his parents and his mother had found the news hard to take, although the rest of the family reacted positively.
In other web chats, he appeared not to mind the prospect of others discovering his sexual orientation.
A friend of Mr Ravi’s, Molly Wei, who allegedly viewed the footage, told police that he was prone to lying and bragging.
Ms Wei, who has known Mr Ravi since school, has agreed to testify against him.
The case will return to Superior Court in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on September 9th.
