Liverpool’s gay arts festival Homotopia begins today
Liverpool’s gay arts festival Homotopia begins its eighth year today.
The festival, whose theme is Cruising for Art, will showcase an “array of the queer, the extravagant, the bold, the unexpected and the daring” with theatre, dance, film, cabaret and discussions.
Arts Council England agreed this summer to fund the event for a further three years.
Exhibitions around the city this year include ‘Savage Style’, a collection of Lily Savage’s dresses, and ‘Pin Ups’, a selection of portraits by Sadie Lee and Matthew Stradling.
Dance highlights include the premiere of ‘Cruising, Clubbing, F**king’ and ‘The Male Species’, a dance trilogy.
Live performances include Dykeotomy by Kimberley Dark and Tranny Hotel, which will see a host of trans performances around the Adelphi Hotel, in bedrooms, staircases and function rooms.
Other highlights include film showings of ‘Rock Hudson: Dark and Handsome Stranger’, ‘A Taste of Honey’ and ‘The British Guide To Showing Off’.
The festival has also presented a year-long exhibition of the work of iconic artist Tom of Finland in Turku, Finland, taken young LGBT people to Warsaw on a cultural exchange and won a community safety award from Merseyside Police Authority.
