Gareth Thomas joins mixed line-up in Celebrity Big Brother
Gay rugby star Gareth Thomas has joined contestants with varying levels of fame for the new series of Celebrity Big Brother.
But the former Wales international, who retired from the sport last year, was not the only housemate MC Romeo Dunn thought was gay.
Speaking to the Channel 5 show’s host Brian Dowling ahead of entering the house, Thomas had said: “I will be myself and prove my family proud.”
The former rugby star, who is set to be played by Mickey Rourke in a film of his life, issued a warning about his “Welsh temper”, and added he was “competitive at everything” before he entered the house.
But the first incident of gay interest came from two straight contestants.
Romeo Dunn and Pineapple Dance Studios instructor Andrew Stone were enjoying cans of beer in the garden when conversation turned to Stone’s youthful appearance.
Romeo says: “No flirting or nothing, but you don’t look a day over 30.”
Stone then tells the former So Solid Crew member: “Look, I’m straight. I’m very straight.”
Romeo initially expresses disbelief, leaning back to look at Stone more critically. Accepting what Stone says, he shakes the dance instructor’s hand and adds: “I like the quiff, though”.
Stone explains: “I’m metrosexual, it doesn’t mean I’m gay. I’m just, just…”
“A dancer?” Romeo suggests.
Stone adds quietly: “If you went out with me, you’d realise how straight I was.”
In Romeo’s defence, Stone was one part of an all-male tribute band to the Pussycat Dolls called the Alley Cat Dogs.
