Rabbi is Sweden’s ‘straight person of the year’
A rabbi has won the title of Sweden’s ‘straight man of the year’.
David Lazar is the rabbi for the Jewish community in Stockholm. He was given the Årets Hetero award by the Swedish QX magazine this month.
Lazar, a father of five, brought his wife to the awards ceremony, joking to the Times of Israel: “I realized that if I get this, I’d better look the part and show up with a woman.”
He said he had probably set a record with the award as it was his second for gay equality advocacy.
He won the Yakir Hakehila award from Tel Aviv’s gay community.
The Times said the American-born rabbi had been a proponent of gay rights in Israel since the 1990s and vowed to maintain this stance when he joined Stockholm.
