Brighton Pride 2012 confirmed
Brighton Pride’s 2012 parade has been confirmed following fears about its former organisers’ debts.
The even will take place on 1 September with a full parade in the city and another ticketed event in Preston Park, which 30,000 people attended last year.
Pride Brighton and Hove said fences and tickets would be necessary again this year for the “safety of all attendees”.
The newly established group Pride Brighton and Hove will operate Pride in Brighton and Hove for 2012 after reports emerged last month claiming former organisers Pride (South East) owed creditors £200,000.
Michael Deol and Robert Webb, the owners of Revenge nightclub, James Ledward, the editor of GScene magazine, and Paul Kemp of Wild Fruit won their bid to organise the festival.
Their organisation, Pride Brighton and Hove, said today it is dedicated to returning the event to its charitable roots. £1 from each ticket sold will be donated to the Rainbow Fund, which gives grants to LGBT/HIV organisations and charities who provide front line services in the city.
Michael Deol said: “We see the continuation of the city’s LGBT festival as integral to Brighton’s economy.
“The annual event has ensured a fantastic summer boom for businesses across the city from guest houses and hotels to restaurants, shops and clubs.
“It is with this in mind, and our belief in the great importance of Brighton’s fantastic LGBT services, that Pride Brighton and Hove are proud to reinstate Pride in 2012.”
Brighton’s Argus reports a bid entered by Pride (South East) was rejected.
