Public invited to equal marriage forums over coming month
Members of the public are being invited to consultation events around England over the next month to discuss how best to introduce equal marriage rights.
Members of the lesbian, gay, bi and transgender community are invited to the events in Birmingham, Exeter, London, Brighton and Durham in the coming weeks to discuss the government’s equal marriage proposals.
The coalition launched its consultation on equal marriage rights last week.
It is seeking the public’s views on how to implement marriage equality for gay and trans people and seeks answers to a number of questions.
Currently, civil marriage ceremonies are the only kind the government plans to allow. Religious denominations would not be allowed to marry gay couples under the proposals being consulted on.
The government also plans to retain the civil partnership system for gays but not open it up to straight couples.
Events are being run by the Consortium of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Voluntary and Community Organisations in partnership with the government’s Equalities Office.
Paul Roberts, Consortium Chief Executive said: “This is an exciting step forward in our quest for true equality and we welcome the Government’s strong positive position on same sex civil marriage.
“We cannot stress enough the importance of LGBT people up and down the country responding to the consultation. We look forward to working with our members during the consultation to ensure the widest range of responses are submitted.”
