Stonewall unveils Facebook Timeline of key gay events since 1989
Stonewall had relaunched its Facebook page utilising the new timeline facility to record key moments for the gay community’s struggle for equality since its foundation in 1989.
The charity was launched to fight the Section 28 ban on the promotion of homosexuality or “acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship” in schools.
The repeal of Section 28 is among the events on the charity’s page highlighting its role in legal changes for gay people in Britain, including the equal age of consent for sex between men and the removal of the ban on gay and lesbian personnel in the Armed Forces.
Stonewall said it hoped the resource would be useful to people interested in gay history in Britain, particularly school and college students.
Stonewall Media Manager Andy Wasley said: “Reading Stonewall’s new Timeline updates reminds you that the equal rights gay people enjoy today often came after long political and legal struggles – and Stonewall was there every step of the way. As we continue to fight for marriage equality and to stamp out homophobia in schools, we hope there will be many more happy updates in the future.”
