Adele unveiled as a new ‘gay icon’
The British pop-singer Adele has been unveiled as a new “gay icon,” in a large survey among listeners of Gaydar Radio, displacing Kylie Minogue who previously held that position.
The singer won more than half of the 4,000 votes for the Pop Artist of the Year, whereas Lady Gaga, her nearest rival, managed only to get around a third of those votes.
Gareth Thomas, the former Welsh rugby player, was named Celebrity of the Year, garnering 27.1% of the votes, and the Swedish football player Anton Hysen was voted as Hero of the Year with 36.6% of the votes.
In a statement, Robin Crowley, programme controller of Gaydar Radio, said: “Adele has had a fantastic year with numerous Grammys and Brit Awards, but we know that this is the accolade she has been waiting for.”
The singer, best known for her song Rolling In The Deep, was received several nominations at the Ivor Novello awards earlier this week.
