David Furnish calls marriage equality the ‘next great civil rights battle’
David Furnish has described the fight for marriage equality for gay couples as the ‘next great battle’ for civil rights.
Furnish, 49, civil partner of pop legend Elton John told the Metro: “I think we’re living in really pivotal times. It’s the next great battle.
“Look at the history of civil rights relating to people’s nationality and colour. Black people were getting the right to vote in America not that long ago – within lifetimes – and parts of the world, where women don’t have any rights at all or have very limited rights.”
He added: “I think we really need to be pushing more and more towards inclusiveness, where we’re all just rubbing shoulders together.”
Earlier this year, Furnish spoke of fears his son would face stigma on account of having two gay fathers.
Furnish told Attitude: “I think he’s going to have a lot of attention thrust upon him.
“He’s going to be potentially doubly stigmatised, because one of his parents is extremely famous and because he comes from two dads.
“We’ve taken advice from counsellors. We’ve put a whole scrapbook together about his creation, the people who were involved in the process and how the intent was about love. We’re going to raise him to be proud of who he is.”
Their first son, Zachary, was born on Christmas Day 2010. His godmother was later confirmed to be Lady Gaga.
