Stephen Twigg, first openly gay man to be elected as an MP comes @Out4Marriage
Stephen Twigg, the first openly gay man to be elected to the UK’s House of Commons, has declared his support for marriage equality in the Out4Marriage campaign.
Mr Twigg, the shadow education secretary, was elected as the Labour MP for Enfield Southgate in 1997.
He was the first openly gay man to be chosen as an MP, beating his party’s openly gay candidate for Exeter, Ben Bradshaw, by only minutes.
Mr Twigg, now MP for Liverpool West Derby says: “We’ve made amazing strides as a country in recent years to eradicate prejudice and discrimination on the basis of sexuality. Changing the law on marriage makes sense to bring in equality for same sex couples who want to get married. That’s why I’m out for marriage.”
Launched last week by PinkNews.co.uk and the Coalition for Equal Marriage and backed by the UK’s major LGBT media companies, the Out4Marriage.org campaign is asking members of the public, politicians and celebrities to “come Out4Marriage.”
It has so far featured videos from among others, top British girl band, The Saturdays.
