Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion and the leader of the Green Party has become the first party leader to publish their Out4Marriage video.

Ms Lucas called on the Government to legislate not consulate and echoed calls made yesterday by the Labour MEP Peter Cashman for straight couples to be allowed to have civil partnerships should they wish.

Ms Lucas said: “The Green party has always supported LGBT equality and we’ve always supported equal marriage. We think it’s absolutely right that same sex and opposite sex couples can either get married or indeed enter into civil partnership arrangements. For us it’s a matter of basic human rights.

She added: “It’s interesting that in a number of other countries like Iceland, Argentina and South Africa same sex marriage is already legal and there’s huge support for it in public opionon here in the UK as well. That’s why we believe we don’t need more consultation, we need more legislation to enshrine equal rights and equal marriage into law.

“That’s why I’m Out4Marriage, are you?”
