Gay comic book characters under fire from One Million Moms
One Million Moms, the American ‘pro-family’ group, is up in arms once more after comic book giants DC Comics and Marvel announced homosexual story lines this week.
In the past week both companies, owned by Warner Bros. and Disney respectively, have cemented their commitment to the LGB community by featuring prominent gay stories in upcoming comics.
DC Comics announced a previously established character was to come out as lesbian, gay, or bisexual, and Marvel ‘s Northstar, the first openly gay hero, is tying the knot with his boyfriend Kyle Jinadu in the current issue of ‘Astonishing X-Men’.
As DC comic fanatics debate who the closeted character might be, One Million Moms have issued a statement on their website condemning the publications.
They said: “Who will they choose; Batman, Superman, Flash, Green Lantern, Plastic Man, or another one of their characters that children look up to?”
The group have described the impending wedding between Northstar and his boyfriend as ‘ridiculous’, and dispute adults’ need for superhero role models.
“They don’t but do want to indoctrate [sic] impressionable young minds by placing these gay characters on pedestals in a positive light,” they said.
“These companies are heavily influencing our youth by using children’s superheroes to desensitize and brainwash them in thinking that a gay lifestyle choice is normal and desirable.”
The group’s aim is to stop the exploitation of children by the entertainment industry, and has asked concerned parents to email DC Comics and Marvel to cancel their homosexual superhero plans.
Axel Alonso, Marvel’s Editor in Chief, said he was proud to be creating stories that were relevant to a modern audience.
“We’ve planned the release of this comic for over a year but the recent discussion of gay marriage, spurred by the comments of President Obama, makes the release of Astonishing X-Men #50 even more timely,” he said.
“The passionate discourse between our fans on both sides of this matter shows that we’ve struck a chord with our millions of fans around the world.”
One Million Moms’ previous targets have clothes retailer GAP, who were under fire after releasing a pro-gay advertising campaign, as well as JCPenny and Urban Outfitters.
