Video: Michelle Obama proud to support marriage equality
Nearly a month after US President Barack Obama came out in support of equal marriage, the First Lady, Michelle Obama, has spoken of her support for the right of gay couples to marry, while answering questions from her Twitter follows.
In a video posted on YouTube by the White House, Mrs Obama was answering a question from four of her one million followers, including one from @Flower4444. This latter user asked: “Please tell us about your family discussions about marriage equality and thank President Obama for his support!”
“This is an important issue for millions of Americans,” Mrs Obama answered. “And for Barack and me, it really comes down to the values of fairness and equality that we want to pass on to our girls. I mean these are basic values that kids learn at a very young age and that we encourage them to apply in all areas of their lives.”
She added: “In a country where we teach our children that everyone is equal under the law, discrimination against same-sex couples just isn’t right… It’s as simple as that.”
Mrs Obama ended by saying that she and President Obama were proud to have the support of the LGBT community. The video ends by showing footage of a gay male couple with their children, and another lesbian couple.
