LGBT causes within Brighton and Hove are set to benefit as the company organising this year’s Pride event issues its first donation, of more than £5,000.

Pride Brighton & Hove the new organisers of the annual event, pledged £1 from every ticket sold for the benefit of local LGBT causes through the Rainbow Fund.

The Rainbow Fund will distribute the money to local LGBT and HIV frontline services and community groups within the city.

The organisers said it would be the first of many planned to be made by Pride to the Rainbow Fund in the run up to city-wide celebration on 1 September.

It was presented by Mayor Bill Randall to Paul Elgood, Chair of the Rainbow Fund. Commenting on the donation, Mr Elgood said: “The Rainbow Fund is delighted to be part of Pride and see it truly return to its community roots.

“This money will go directly to local frontline LGBT and HIV/AIDS charities working to make a difference in the community. The grants process will close just a month after Pride in early October with decisions in November. The process will be independently overseen by the Sussex Community Foundation and we want to see this money get to the community groups who need it most as quickly and fairly as possible after Pride.”

Trevor Edwards, Director of Pride said: “It’s wonderful that such early support for Pride has allowed us to present this cheque today for over £5,000. Thanks to Legends for their hospitality and thanks to all our early ticket purchasers for making this happen. As we enter our second stage of ticketing I would encourage people to buy their tickets early, so that we can present more cheques like this faster than planned.”

Tickets for Pride Brighton & Hove on 1 September are on sale at www.pridebrighton.org priced from £8.50, with £1 going to the Rainbow Fund.
