Washington DC Republican committee adds gay-inclusive language
The Washington DC Republican Committee (DCRC) has became the first Republican state party to adopt gay-inclusive language into its party platform.
Under the heading of ‘Family and Marriage,’ the DCRC inserted the words: “We, the Republicans of the District of Columbia support the belief that all individuals, without regard to sexual orientation, are entitled to full and equal protection under the laws and the Constitution and that everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and respect.”
The change comes ahead of the Republican National Convention, to be held in Tampa in August. Oregon’s state Republican party recently removed language condemning same-sex parents.
In contrast, the Texas state Republican party has adopted a platform stating that homosexuality “tears at the fabric of society”.
Republican gay rights group Log Cabin Republicans praised the change, although Robert Turner II, president of the group’s DC chapter, said the state party didn’t adopt the exact language he hoped for.
However, Turner said: “We are excited to be a part of a state party who understands that inclusion wins! Marriage equality is settled law here in the District. All citizens, including LGBT citizens should be treated equally.”
He added: “We didn’t get the exact wording we had hoped for, but we are extremely happy with the outcome. We commend Chairman Bob Kabel on his efforts in putting this document together.”
