3,000 gay couples marry in New York
In the 12 months since equal marriage was legalised in New York, more than 3,000 gay couples have tied the knot.
According to the Syracuse Post-Standard, the number of gay weddings since June 24th 2011 stands at 3,037, not including New York City.
The figures come from the Department of Health.
New York was the sixth state in the US to grant gay couples the right to wed.
As America’s third most populous state, New York’s breakthrough doubled the number of gay Americans who can marry in their own state.
As New York has no residency requirement for marriage, gay couples from other states have been able to take advantage of the law.
